The Art Therapy Project (TATP) is a nonprofit mental health organization providing free group art therapy to adults and youth affected by trauma. Using the art-making process and with support from our art therapists, clients learn how to explore feelings, increase self-awareness and cope with life’s challenges. Since opening our doors in 2011, we have served more than 8,685 clients including adults and youth, and now run a TeleArt Therapy program in addition to our in-person art therapy sessions.
Currently, TATP is running three LGBTQIA+ groups and partners with the Anti-Violence Project and Callen-Lorde for client referrals.
The participants in these art therapy groups have benefited from the structure and routine provided by meeting weekly. The ability to connect with each other in an emotionally safe space has helped them navigate and work through the stressors that are ever present in the world today. While each group member is on an independent journey of self-discovery and healing, collectively as a group they support each other through this emotionally charged experience and find comfort in the unfolding creative process that emerges between them within the artwork.
The Art Therapy Project is grateful to the Phil Zwickler Charitable and Memorial Foundation Trust for supporting our LGBQTIA+ programming.
